Originally, the Samurai armor is made of black-lacquered iron plates tied together. The armor was surprisingly flexible, allowing its wearer to move freely. The armored skirt, called a kusazuri, shields the thighs, while the arm coverings combine protective chain mail with fine silk. The armor symbolizes honor, valor, and loyalty. The samurai comprised less than 10% of the Japanese population, but their teachings are still observed in everyday Japanese life and in modern martial arts.
